Who Are We? Where Do We Come From?

Roy Strong believes we need to understand where we come from in order to decide in which direction we want to go. Any British photographer schooled in the second half of the 20th century could hardly fail to be drawn into documenting and debating our identity.

In 2010 I began a conscious exploration of my own practice and evaluation of the photographic image that has been part of my life over the previous 40 years.

With an eye on “The Big Society”, Royal Weddings and the collapse of trust in the financial system I started a quiet project documenting the scenes in front of me, including less mainstream parts of our blessed plot.

Britishness, and Englishness can still be accidentally confused. Less so beyond the English borders. However the symbols of political intervention are embedded in the landscape and in the minds of the people. Then there was Brexit.
